MY WRITING PROCESS

A friend of mine on twitter (@scarlettflame2), who also has a blog, contacted me, asking if I would like to get involved in a process where bloggers help one another out by answering four questions then tagging three other bloggers. So here goes:

1) What am I working on?

I published a SF/F book which can be found on amazon under the name of THE CHOSEN ONE. I am busy self promoting this book. Here is a link;  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K0SH3EI

I am editing my second book which is also a SF/F novel. I have also written seven movie script outlines for a produce. He has been shopping them around and so far one has the potential of being green lit.

I directed a music video which is being edited and should be ready in a couple of weeks. There is a possibility of having funding for my first feature directorial debut next year.

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?

THE CHOSEN ONE is actually built upon real dreams that I had over a fifteen year period. I decided one day to write the dreams down before they became forgotten. In the process a story formed out of it.

I think the only way my work differs from other authors in my genre is that I don't have the extensive vocabulary that other well educated authors have. My books are written from my educational background, thus anyone can read it; and some people may find them boring because of the layman's terminology that I use. But thank God I found an excellent editor who does wonders to my limited words.

3) Why do I write what I do?

I write because I like to write. I write for me and if I feel the story is good enough for the public then I'll let it loose into the wild world of readers. If I feel it isn't ready for public viewing then I'll put it to one side and years later I'll take it out again and work on it some more.

I also enjoy writing SF/F because I have a wild imagination and in the genre of SF/F the author can concoct strange believable characters and wild worlds filled with bizarre landscapes.

4) How does my writing process work?

I have an idea or concept or character or place or event. From this I let it grow inside my brain. Once it begins to take shape I'll start writing down bits and pieces of the story, characters, places, dialogue.

Sometimes I'll do an outline and other times I'll have no outline. If I do an outline then I like to treat it as if it was a short story. What I mean by this is that the short story is an abridged version of the completed novel.

Once I start writing I'll have an idea of how the characters will and/or should act/react in situations. I'll also have an understanding of where the story is going and how it should end. Having said that, however, I will let the story and characters take on their own lives and lead the story where they want it to go; within reason.

In the beginning, when I was very, very, very...did I mention very...attached to my writing, I would keep everything. You would have to pull out my fingernails before I agreed to throw out useless or nonessential parts of my book.

But now when I am finished, I will print of the manuscript and read it through with pencil in hand. Once this has been completed then I'll make changes to the book on the computer. I'll put it off to one side, come back weeks later read it out loud and fix any errors that I'll come across. Once this process is completed I'll put it through the second last stage which is take the entire manuscript and edit it one page at a time; I mean go over the entire page with a magnifying glass. Then I send it out to four dear friends who give me feedback, I'll fix any suggestions and then it's off to my editor.

My friend, Scarlett Flame, has an excellent blog. Here is her link   http://missscarlettflame.blogspot.co.uk/   She writes erotica. Her first book, BOUND FOR PASSION, was published in December 2013. She is presently working on her second book.

DREAMS

I received this today from a satisfied reader of my book THE CHOSEN ONE "Okay so I am on pg 205... Very good! I am at the intro of the Red Head and I know there's more to her than just being the receptionist.........will check back in... Good stuff"

here is the link http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K0SH3EI

In the book, any time the main character, Pearson, enters a dream or a dream-like state, those dreams are based on real dreams that I had.

I had been having weird and bizarre dreams over a fifteen year period. One day I decided to write them down before I ended up forgetting them. While writing them down I started to think that perhaps it would make a good story. So I filled in the dreams with action, characters and plot. Eventually the story began to take shape.

After that I spent the next year working the story's angle and then two years editing it. What you have is a collection of my dreams but told in a fictional setting.

Hope you will enjoy my book and leave a review when you are done. Thx

My First Blog

This is my attempt at reaching out to the masses. Not sure what I should post here so I'll start off with a bit about me:

E. Douglas Brown was born on the east coast of Canada on an island called Newfoundland. Before settling down in Burnaby, BC, I had served eight years in the military; was a mountaineering instructor in Germany; was an avid long distance runner; earned a B.A. from the Memorial University of Newfoundland; worked as a counsellor in group homes; is currently testing out powerlifting routines for older lifters; and is presently working in the movie industry.
I have always enjoyed writing or being involved in the entertainment industry. I've written, produced, directed and edited several shorts; produced a play; had several poems published; performed as a stand-up comedian; produced a feature; written several movie scripts; and working on my first music video.
I am currently writing outlines for a movie producer, with several of them short listed and possibly being picked up. I've written a script, ZOMBIES INCORPORATED, which may possibly be optioned. Along with the script there is a comic book, ZOMBIES INCORPORATED, issue one. Here is the link (http://www.amazon.ca/Zombies-Incorporated-Inc-Season/dp/B00FQWBTIY). I'm editing my second book which should be out in the year, 2015.

To stay in touch with the author you can follow him on twitter @EDougBrown or his author FaceBook page http://t.co/9ke2Cv5l
My first book THE CHOSEN ONE http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K0SH3EI is a sci-fi, fantasy thriller. Click on the link and there is a good description of what the book is about. I plan on writing two more books in THE CHOSEN ONE SERIES, however, my second book, that I'm editing now, isn't associated with this series.
My second book, FLOTSAM 59, is also a sci-fi thriller. It should be published in by the end of this year. here is a quick synopsis of what the story is about.

FLOTSAM 59
Earth was nearly destroyed during the Great War of 2255-3000. A war fought between the clones and the humans. During this devastating war, the clones had built themselves a ship and flew off into outer space, leaving the humans to their own demise.
While the Earth was literally falling to pieces, scientist had devised a system where chunks of earth could be encapsulated within an airtight bubble. One hundred chunks of earth, called FLOTSAM, each containing a specified number of people, escaped from Earth just as it imploded. Over the next one thousand years ninety-nine of the Flotsam had been destroyed, lost in space or vanished mysteriously.
One Flotsam remains, and its leader, Zach Tobias, is responsible for the survival of the human race. His Flotsam, containing one thousand people, had been originally built to hold only five hundred. The Flotsam is overcrowded; food and space is running out; people are unsatisfied and complaining about their leader; two female androids are discovered on the Flotsam; Zach is challenged to defend his leadership, a challenge that must be fought in the arena to the death; and to make matters worse, a spaceship filled with human clones and androids is hunting them.
Op-Ba, leader of the clone and android ship, had discovered that immortality can be achieved for the clones by strategically intertwining a human baby’s DNA with theirs. He had discovered the location of the last Flotsam and is now closing in. Along their travels they acquire the help from different races to aid them in ridding the cosmos of humans.
Come along for an adventuresome ride where you’ll meet characters like the NINJAS, who are seven feet tall with skin as tough as steel; hired by Op-Ba to fight against the humans. Four foot tall reptilians called NOSTRAFERNS, who are space scavengers; friends of the humans. KING MIDAS, ruler of the universe. The TIMER TRAVLERS. You’ll also land on a planet called PLANET PARADISE, a planet where anything can be bought for the right price, and sometimes that price is your life.

With Op-Ba's ship on a mission to annihilate the last of the humans and destroy the last Flotsam, could this be the end for all of humanity? Will Zach do whatever is necessary to keep the human race alive and from becoming extinct? Even if it means sacrificing some of his own people?
